Our Story
Education for independence
At Taste of Malawi, we believe that change becomes real when it is rooted in skills, culture, and shared responsibility.
What began in 2014 as a local training initiative in Lilongwe has grown into a dynamic space of learning, creativity, and cooperation. Over the years, we’ve worked closely with women in Malawi and with volunteers from across the globe to shape a program that is practical, personal, and connected.
The Heart of Our Work
At the core of our project lies the training programme. It is the foundation on which we build long-term support for the tailors on their path to financial independence. Developed jointly by our tailoring teachers in Malawi and experienced tailors from our off-site team, the curriculum is continuously refined to ensure a high-quality learning experience tailored to the women’s needs and realities.
The training consists of two structured levels that build on one another – not only in content, but also in learning environment and responsibility.
Level 1 – Building Foundations
In their first year, students are trained in the classroom. They learn essential tailoring skills: hand- and machine sewing, pattern cutting, taking measurements, and calculating fabric use. The programme also includes English language skills and client communication, empowering the women to confidently consult with customers and express their own ideas. Some arrive with crafting experience, others with none, but by the end of Level One, they all reach the same standard of proficiency. To ensure genuine commitment, a small tuition fee is required. While seemingly counterintuitive in a non-profit context, this step has proven crucial to fostering engagement and accountability. For those unable to afford it, we are currently developing a scholarship programme to ensure access for all.
Level 2 – Learning in Practice
The second year transitions from classroom to workshop. Here, students put their skills into practice by working on real orders for our in-house label and external clients. They are guided by teachers and mentored by former graduates. In return for their work, Level Two participants receive a salary. Their efforts culminate in the official TEVETA certificate, awarded at a celebratory graduation. This national qualification empowers the women to prove their expertise to future clients and employers alike.
After Graduation
Upon completing the two-year programme, many graduates choose to remain with Taste of Malawi as fully employed tailors – earning a higher salary and contributing to the next generation’s growth. Others may use their skills to start their own businesses. Either way, they become part of a vibrant community that extends far beyond the training period. Since 2020, we’ve also provided health insurance to our employed tailors – a crucial step toward long-term security and dignity in work. From 2025, a pension fund complements this support, ensuring a more secure future beyond their active years.
Culture, Connection, and Community
Beyond learning how to sew, the women reclaim traditional knowledge and artisanal techniques passed down through generations – breathing new life into Malawi’s cultural heritage with pride and creativity. Throughout and beyond the training, a strong community network fosters solidarity, exchange, and mutual support. This network reinforces the autonomy they’ve gained and opens meaningful pathways for personal and professional development.
Alongside the training centre in Lilongwe, the project is supported by an international team of young volunteers from Europe and North America. This external team leads fundraising, communications, product sales, and overall coordination. Just like the women in Malawi, our volunteers grow, learn, and are transformed through this shared journey of mutual respect, intercultural collaboration, and social impact.
We believe that by investing in women – and the culture that shapes them – we can stitch together a more just, creative, and sustainable future. One thread at a time.
Our Values
What drives us – in Malawi and beyond. Our vision fuels every step we take. It lives through four values that shape how we act, connect, and create impact.
Agency
We believe in the power of women to shape their futures. We offer tools, trust, and space to grow economically and socially.
Cultural Integrity
Our work is rooted in respect for traditional craft, local fabrics, and cultural heritage. With every product, we show that fashion from Malawi can be globally relevant, without losing its roots.
Shared Ownership
We work together as equals. Decisions and responsibilities are shared. That’s how trust grows.
Transformative Learning
Education is more than skills – it’s confidence, independence, and lasting change. For our students, our team and our volunteers.
